Triathlon is a rather individual sport, but I trained in a large group in Leuven for six years. At that time I wasn’t out and it took a while before I really knew I was attracted to girls. After all, in sports you’re in an environment where it is not that common to have a different sexual orientation.
When I was in a relationship with my current girlfriend, everyone knew. The more you hide it, the more awkward you make it for yourself. My coach knows about us too, but we do not discuss that topic really, as I do tend to keep my personal life private. Although he once mentioned he did notice I was doing remarkably well and my girlfriend must be having a rather positive influence on me. So I suppose he truly sees how happy I am and how it affects my performance in a positive way.
It happens I get stupid questions sometimes, mainly from boys. I know it’s because of ignorance of course. For example, some guys in sports think that my bisexuality is a phase, I find that very frustrating. According to them, it’s not possible for a feminine woman like me to be gay, but they have no idea about my life or about my feelings whatsoever.
In the end, I think there are much more people who respect you for what you dare to do, than people who disrespect you for who you are. And that’s what needs to give you strength. In every aspect of life, people will be criticizing you. Is that because of the person you are? No, it’s not, it’s their problem.
The more you hide it, the more awkward you make it for yourself.
When participating in international competitions, it strikes me that especially the athletes from Eastern Bloc countries are still quite conservative. Even when catching a glimpse of my tattoos, they give me that look and I can feel them gossiping behind my back. But I stay true to myself, keeping in mind that it can help other people within sports.
